The men took great pride in their work as vigilantes in a town on the decline. They protected it from monsters, made it a place where the townsfolk could sleep comfortably at night, and left them feeling a sense of importance.
And then a hero appeared and brought peace to the town. The townsfolk—who were once grateful to the vigilantes—found their respect all but vanished, and turned their admiration to the hero overnight.
The vigilantes couldn't believe what happened.
They couldn't accept that they were no longer appreciated after all they'd done for the village.
They hated the new hero. And so to take him down, they decided to play the part of criminals in the dead of night.
If the town was threatened once again, the townsfolk would surely seek their help again.
Or at least, that was their thinking... Although it pained them to do so, they made the town's food storage the target of their attack.
But they did not expect the townsfolk to be waiting for them there.
They hadn't forgotten their efforts and were still grateful for all they had done.
