The cursed sword had a relatively modest appetite.
It exacted a toll for every two deaths instead of every one. It asked only one thing in return: the user's second most prized possession.
The man felt that everything besides his own life was worthless. He felt no differently about the parents that raised him than he did about random acquaintances.
The only thing that mattered to him was his own life.
Status and honor were also of no importance.
"This cursed sword is awfully beautiful,"
he said after taking his fourth life.
It was then that his life lost its place as his most important possession, though he would not keep it for long.
